Step 6 Underside & Rim Posted Sep. 5, 2003
Our rebuilding & refinishing processes includes a careful hand sanding and repair of the underside of the piano. The Underside of a grand piano is comprised of a laminated rim which is bent to the classic grand piano shape, large to massive solid wood beams which help this large structure maintain it's shape and withstand the enormous pressures of the plate and stringing scale, the underside of the keybed which serves as the cradle and housing for the keyboard, and the leg and lyre pedastles which those components are fastened to. This portion of the Renaissance Rebuilding Process is of great importance as the structure does indeed maintain many of the forces which impact upon the instrument throughout it's life. Safety issues also are considered at this point as many grand pianos actually fall at one time or another due to weak or distorted leg sockets, poor leg toggle condition or other existing conditions. This is also the time that we address issues of great importance regarding the underside of the soundboard and ribs. Cracks in the board are carefully repaired prior to finishing. Browse more...
