Step 12
Stringing

Posted Aug. 30, 2003

Stringing begins with the duplication of the original pin block. A new pin block consists of multiple layers of hard rock maple and fits the underside of the plate precisely. Tuning pin locations are marked and drilled into the block. Each hole must be perfect in location and diameter in order to hold the tension of the strings.

Stringing In Progress

Important factors in stringing are the accuracy of tuning hole placements, drilling consistency and drill bit speed. We rotate high quality special tuning pin drill bits throughout the process which helps to prevent dulling of the bit and overheating and expansion of the bit which may enlarge holes throughout the process. A Vortex air stream chilling apparatus is focused at the point of each drill bit during the process to prevent overheating and expanding during this procedure. Without these precautions and measures, a piano might feel unstable during tuning and may very well not maintain accurate pitch levels in general. Tuners and technicians often comment on weak pin blocks before and in some cases even after an improper restringing.

Setting Tuning Pins

New custom-made and matched copper wound over steel core bass strings and German Rosleau treble wires are hand wound onto new tuning pins. New understring cloth is cut and fitted to the plate in each section. Original damper heads are refinished and fit with custom cut vertically grained damper felts. Multiple chip-tunings bring the scale to pitch and several full tunings stabilize each restrung piano at Concert A440.
