Step 13
Keyboard/Action Assembly

Posted Aug. 29, 2003

The action frame is cleaned and the friction strip replaced. New wippens and custom-ordered hammers, shanks, and flanges are installed, traveled, and leveled. Keytops are replaced if desired. New front, center, and backrail cloths are installed. Key frame pins are polished, the key height is restored, and the keys are rebushed. The keyboard and action are regulated, a process that creates uniform key, hammer, and damper movement and placement and leaves the piano in perfect working order. The pedal lyre, trapwork, and back action are regulated as well.

Keys will be rebushed at the front and center rails and the wippens will usually be replaced. To continue the keyboard preparation, we clean the keyframe and polish all keypins. The brass key "capstans" are buffed and dry lubricated with Teflon powder to reduce friction.
